Distinctive Characteristics of a BMX Bicycle

BMX is a competition of speed and technique.
Up to eight riders start simultaneously and compete for position on a man-made track. Along the track are placed man-made jumps and berms. There are three preliminaries and one final race.

Race Development Combination Jump Electric Starting Gate
Up to eight riders start simultaneously and immediately begin a sprint-type race. A rider's technique for clearing jumps has an impact on their chance of winning. These are a series of two or more jumps combined with a hillock. Riders rest their front tires on the gate located up on the starting mound and start as soon as it falls open electrically.
Single Jump Starting Mound Double Jump
Rather than jumping, it is faster to ride through these jumps. This mound is made of earth packed down at the beginning of the course. Area where there are two jumps in the same space as a single jump. Some riders prefer to jump both in a single attempt while others like to ride through them one at a time.
Berm Tabletop Big Double
A dirt wall banked as much as possible to allow riders to ride through turns at top speed. A jump with a flat top. Like a double jump, racers jump over them at high speed. This is the place for rider to show off their flamboyant jumping style as they heroically fly over two hills at top speed.
Step Up Triple Jump Class Division
Jump area where the landing is higher than the jump surface. Speed in maintained after the landing because of the flamboyant jump and long backside. Series of three single jumps. Some riders jump the first two and ride through the third while other prefer to clear all three at once.
