Mountain bikes are equipped with 24-speed gears.
These bikes employ highly rigid over-sized tubing that is thicker than that used for normal frames. All of its components are made for rugged use including high-performance brakes and knobby tires that provide control even on off-road courses.

Distinctive Characteristics of a MTB

Mountain bike courses employ the natural features of the land.
Competitive courses for mountain bikes include woodland paths, narrow roads, fields, dirt and gravel paths, and other unpaved surfaces as much as possible. Paved sections are limited to 15% of the entire course.

Starting Area Race Finish Paved Surfaces
The race starts on flat land or an uphill area, and the course 30 m before the starting line to 100 m after must be at least 10 m wide. The race ends when the leading edge of a rider's tire reaches the finish line. Ideally there are no paved surfaces, but if there are, their length is limited to 15% of the total course.
Distance Markers Finish Area
These are placed on the sides of the course every 1 km to show the remaining distance. The race finishes on flat land or an uphill area, and the course at this point must be at least 4 m wide.
