Trials bikes are nearly all one speed.
There are specially designed 20-inch trials bikes as well as models based on a 26-inch mountain bike. These bikes have special tires for trial races, a low-speed gear, and heavy-duty hydraulic brakes.

Trial racing began in the Catalonia region of Spain.
Trial races which began spontaneously in the Catalonia region of Spain in the mid-1970's consist of indoor competitions where rider technique is challenged on man-made obstacle courses and outdoor competitions in which natural geographical features are selected to form a course. Riders compete to see who can get through each section in the fastest time without touching the ground with their feet. Points are added for each touch, and the rider with the least amount of points at the end wins.

Sections Race Development Observer
Each approximately 20 m section is rated for difficulty. A course consists of six to ten of these sections. Riders start one at a time. The winner is the rider who has the lowest score upon the completion of two laps around the entire course. The maximum penalty for one section is normally 5 points. Each touch of the foot to the ground results in one point. Each section must be finished within 2 minutes, and failing to do so will result in a 5-point penalty. An observer is placed at each section to watch for penalty points.
